Sinus surgery is a common procedure performed by ENT specialists. There are many different types of sinus surgery, depending on the diagnosis of the individual receiving it. These procedures can range from cosmetic to necessary for normal function, and each is done with its own techniques and comes with its own set of risks. Learn more about some of the more common sinus surgeries from Commonwealth ENT.

Sinus surgeryNasal Endoscopy

This simple procedure is used as a diagnostic tool. It is so simple that an ENT specialist will often do it in their office rather than a surgical suite. In a nasal endoscopy, a small tube with a camera and light on the end (endoscope) is inserted into the nose to achieve a view of the sinus cavities. The doctor will guide the camera to check for issues that would normally be missed in a regular visual exam, such as posterior nasal polyps, a deviated septum, enlarged adenoids, or an infection. This visualization aids the specialist in diagnosing and treating diseases.

Somnoplasty

Another simple office procedure, somnoplasty is performed to reduce the occurrence of chronic snoring. The doctor inserts a needle electrode near the throat which emits a radiofrequency to shrink or stiffen the tissue around the soft palate, uvula, and base of the tongue. Up to 80% of patients see a significant reduction in their snoring.

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery is performed for patients with chronic sinusitis, which is infection, blockage, and pain of the sinuses. An ENT uses an endoscope, like that used during nasal endoscopy, to open and drain the sinuses, and remove any chronically diseased tissue in order to reestablish good airflow. The use of an endoscope enables the procedure to be fairly non-invasive, making recovery quicker and more painless. An ENT may also use an endoscope to repair a deviated septum from a previously broken nose, which could also be a root cause of chronic sinusitis.
